I’m not really sure why, but recently I have had a good amount of people ask me advice on decorating. First of all, I am very flattered. And second of all,… I am just very flattered. Where to begin? Well, we could start with decorating style. Sound good? When It comes to designing and decorating your house, there is a very important questions you should ask yourself, “what is my decorating style?” Defining your style and what you really like can save you a lot of money in the long run, trust me. Is my style, Contemporary? Vintage? Modern? Tuscan? Southwest? Shabby Chic? Traditional? Victorian? Funky? Sometimes, or even most of the time, it doesn’t have to be just one of these. You could even be eclectic and like a combination of many different styles. I find myself drawn to Mid-Century Modern design. I like my furniture to be very modern/contemporary and I like to accessorize with vintage things. So I guess you could say my design style is Modern/Vintage. Just go with it. Did you figure yours out? Ok good, moving on.
So now that we have our style figured out, it’s time to move onto the fun part, window shopping! I like to window shop and compare prices before I make a purchase, this saves me having to take things back. And I hate taking things back. Also before I buy something, I try to envision where it is going to go and how it will look in that space. Then, if I feel happy about it, like really happy about it, I buy it.
Now that we figured out our style and purchased the decor, it’s time to start decorating!
Here are 6 basic rules that I have found very helpful when it comes to decorating.
- Balance
- Portion and space
- Rhythm
- Bring the outdoors in
- Focal point
- Theme, Style, Harmony
